Fact: Daniel Bryan is adorable, William Regal may not really be an old villain

It’s ironic – I sat through approximately 84 weeks of NXT Redemption before giving up on it as a depressingly bad job, and as soon as I do I miss out on what I think may be one of the most touching things I’ve ever witnessed – not just in wrestling, but possibly ever.

We all know that Bryan Danielson is a very nice, well-mannered young man; his in-ring brilliance is more often than not attributed to the work he did with Shawn Michaels in his early years.

The internet smarks, however, know that Danielson also spent some time training with William Regal, veteran, NXT co-commentator and self-confessed old villain. When Daniel Bryan lifted that briefcase at Money in the Bank, Twitter was flooded with fans pleading for Bryan to face his old mentor in a championship match.

It’ll probably never happen, because the WWE hates the internet. So Bryan, shunted to NXT because we’re not allowed proper wrestling on RAW or Smackdown or even Superstars these days, paid his own tribute to Regal last week.
Here he acknowledges him on his entrance to the ring…

Here he puts on the Regal stretch as his finishing manoeuvre…

Here Regal realises what his former prodigy is doing…

And Bryan finishes the day by going over to thank the man who helped make him the wrestler he is today.

If you’ve not seen the show and can’t be bothered to sit through 45 minutes of fluff (although Curt Hawkins’s appearance on the mic at the start is worth watching), you can see the end of Bryan/Slater in the first two minutes of this clip. Enjoy!

They are such an adorable pair! I take it you know that the colour of DBD’s ring gear is also a tribute to Regal?

  2. Carrie says:

Yep – believe they discussed that on comms as well. Regal won’t confirm it one way or t’other though.
